Monarch Butterfly Pastel Painting

'Monarch at the Beach' 5x7 pastel

It was good to get dusty again and paint something new. This painting is a study for a commission I have for a large butterfly painting. I am trying to work out possible background ideas. The Monarch Butterfly is from one of the photos I took at Harbor Island this week. On our one nice day there were a few Monarchs flying around the dunes. I was lucky enough to sneak up on this one while he was resting and I took a few quick photos. They don't stay still!!! I am going to try another version with a bougainvilla in the background.
