'Into the Twilight' pastel 18x24 ©Karen MargulisIt is always exciting to get the news that a painting has been juried into an exhibition. I am excited about having my painting be in such wonderful company at this show. The juror is Fred Somers and I wish I had been able to take his workshop. The Opening Reception is May 17th from 6-8 PM at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. I hope that my local friends will be able to come.
A little bit about this painting. It is done on Uart paper with an oil paint stain underpainting. I was able to leave some of the drips alone and they became tree trunks and marsh grasses. My goal was to simplify the marsh grasses as much as possible. I ended up using several layers of fixative which helps contribute to the feeling of texture in the grasses and the sky. When I was almost finished I felt like I could feel the quiet of the marsh at twilight but thought it was missing something.....then I added the fireflies! These were done with the dusting technique of shaving pastel and pushing it in with a rolling pin.

Congratulations! The painting creates such a wonderful mood. The fireflies really make it, the scene has wonderful depth and intensity. That moment is so fleeting and rich I'm not surprised it was accepted.

I LOVE all your work and LOVE-LOVE this one. One day I will OWN a "Karen Margulais" but in the meantime I need to tell you how much I appreciate all the work you do posting so much info on your blog. As far as I'm concerned, you should get that blogger award. I'm sure a lot of people have learned from your blog. Hoping to take workshop w/ you even though I don't use pastels at the moment.
