Playing with Abstracts

'Raven Cliffs' 12x16 pastel
You know you have the right art teacher when you come up with similar ideas. I had been thinking of playing with abstracts and Jayne and I had discussed trying them and last night at class, Marsha tells us we are going to do an abstract this session! I figured I'd start playing around ahead of time. I really know nothing about how to go about painting an abstract. I chose one of my photos of the red cliffs of Moab, Utah and liquified it in photoshop (fun!) Then I based my painting on the result. I see a raven in in so I am calling it 'Raven Cliffs' That was fun!

I agree, this is great! It´s so powerfully expressive, like the rocks take different, interesting shapes over and over. I think you´ve succeed in capturing the spirit of the rocks.

Thanks for giving me some inspiration!
