New Mexico Landscape in Gouache

'Corrales Harvest'        5x7      gouache     ©Karen Margulis
I have a big oil commission on the easel today so I am sharing another gouache painting I did yesterday.  I am a member of the Let's Paint New Mexico group.  Each month Dee Sanchez issues another painting challenge and we all submit our finished paintings to the website.  She always has some wonderful and inspiring photos and it is great to see how the other artists interpret the same scene. You can visit the website at www.letspaintnewmexico.com

This month's challenge is a harvest scene from Corrales New Mexico. I decided I would try it in gouache since I'd like to bring them with me on my Southwest adventure this summer. I wanted to see if I would be able to capture the colors of the Southwestern landscape. Next I will try to do some 'red rocks' since we will be seeing a lot of those on our trip.

I have been asked what it is like to work in gouache. To be fair I only have three small paintings under my belt so it is hard to say. I do find the look to be similar to a pastel. The little painting above is a pastel but I find it to look very similar to the larger gouache painting. I'm sure as I learn more I will have more helpful comments!

On another note, Santa came early yesterday and I have some goodies to share!  Be sure to come back this week to see the fun presents I got!

I really like what you did with the picture. You turned an otherwise kinda lifeless image (sorry, Mrs. Dee) into a beautiful pastel. Brilliant.
