You are invited!  I've started the Miles of Canvas Club for my weekly students and would love for you to join us.  If you have read my blog at all than you probably know that I am a big believer in daily painting. I believe that making time to paint often is the most effective way to become a better artist. Oh sure you need to study. You need to learn the basics of painting and your chosen medium. But without practice the knowledge doesn't have a chance to work for you.

But it is hard to find time to paint every day. I know some just don't have time in their schedule. But even just some small quick studies each week will help....and every little bit counts toward your Miles of Canvas!  We did 7 minute studies in this week's classes.  Here are a few more of mine. They are a great way to break the ice and warm up. Once you get in the studio and just START it is easier to keep going.

So what is the Miles of Canvas Club?

The Miles of Canvas Club is a way to encourage my students to paint more in between class times. Each student will get a Miles of Canvas punch card. If they bring in paintings they have done in between class time they will get a punch on their card....fill the card by the end of the last class session then they get to choose a prize (secret prizes for now)  For now I am only giving one punch per week so they will need 6 punches to win.

I can't offer my readers a prize.....but you can join us and decide on a special thing that you would like...and if you fill your card by the end of November then you can treat yourself to to your own prize. Maybe a new box of pastels??  Not only will you earn a treat...you will have benefitted from painting more often!

  1. This is a great idea! I love your suggestion of taking it offline and doing it myself. Nothing improves skill better than more frequent practice.

Working fast at small sizes seems to have more of an impact on my learning curve than long difficult projects. Today I did two watercolor sketches of a pigeon, not quite from life. I studied it for about five minutes outdoors then painted from memory immediately after that. They came out pretty good and even the page layout wasn't bad. The details I was trying to memorize sank deep and if I put a bird into a cityscape, those little pigeon studies will help me remember how it moved.

The other fun thing is that the inbetweeners can be any subject. That always makes it fun.
