Now You Can Watch Me Paint Live on Periscope!

It has become a mild addiction. I admit it. I love people watching so this new discovery is an easy way to indulge in some great people watching. I am talking about Periscope. If you haven't heard about it yet you will. It has the potential to become a big thing. Periscope is a live video streaming app. It was purchased by Twitter in March. It allows users to live stream video from their phones.

I have been having fun watching other peoples live videos called 'scopes'. Some of them are fun and interesting and some not so much. But I can see the potential. It is the perfect tool for sharing. It is so easy to pick up the phone and take a quick video in the studio or out in the field. The broadcasts are live so no editing is possible which lends a touch of the real thing to the broadcasts. The broadcasts are available on Periscope for 24 hours. They can also be shared and saved to the broadcaster's camera roll.

After watching scopes for the last couple of weeks I decided it would be fun to try my hand at Periscope. I had my husband take video of me as I painted a quick daily painting.

Watch my Periscope broadcast of my 10 minute demo now on Youtube. Click here to watch.

I had fun painting this little 6x9 study of two trees. This was a scene from my recent trip to Sweden. I used a piece of Wallis paper from my stash and a selection of Terry Ludwig and other misc. pastels.

So how was the experience making a Periscope broadcast? It was fun! I love doing my You Tube videos but they are time consuming.... planning the painting, setting up the camera, uploading and editing video all take time. On the other hand doing a scope is easy....picking up the phone and shooting a quick live video is painless!

I would like to do more Periscope broadcasts and I invite you to follow along. All you need to do is get the free Periscope app. www.periscope.tv and follow me. In the app go to the people tab and search for me @karenmargulis

The broadcasts will stay on your periscope list for 24 hours so you don't have to watch them live. Let me know what you think about my scope! Is this something you would like to see me do more often?

Loved the demo! Love your blog. I am a watercolorist but recently inherited some pastels. I don't know where to start but Pastel is my favorite medium - it is so soft looking. I am working up to trying it. Would you notify us on your blog when you have a new Periscope recording to watch? I would find it difficult to go hunt. Thanks.

Love the demo! This format has a lot of immediacy and your husband did well with holding the camera. Jennifur was awesome as the lead-in host! Fans of Jennifur should know she gets the opening shot and has a sweet expression. Please do notify us on this blog and link whenever you do a new Periscope recording or upload it to Youtube. It rocks!

Gave me some ideas for how to handle a video demo too, now what I need is to figure out camera setup when I don't have an assistant filming.

Thanks for the comments and positive response. I am trying to figure out some of the logistics such as notifying when I do a new scope. I may try to do some short tip scopes and edit them together into a weekly YouTube.
Robert, I am trying to figure out the filming when I am by myself. I found a nice tripod mount for iPhone but it is for an iPhone 6. When I upgrade my phone this fall I will probably get that.

Awesome demo! I support any technology that allows you to easily record these super helpful videos. One tip for your husband - at least on my phone, if you start a video with your phone held horizontal instead of vertical, it will remain horizontal -- this would allow him to zoom in more without cutting off the sides of your painting. I love how close your dog sits while you paint -- looks like you have some good furry helpers. :) Thanks so much Karen - please keep them coming!

Thanks Lori! I appreciate the tip and agree with you but Periscope only allows using the vertical position. Hopefully it is something they will improve so we can shoot horizontally in the future!

So cool!..I find it hard to keep up with painting, let alone new technology.. Could you mount your reference photo directly above the painting?. I think it would be easier to follow along with it on view as you painted... Awesome!
