'Morning Marsh' 12x24 pastel
There is nothing like painting with pastels! They can't be matched for their intensity and luminosity. I love the immediacy and the feeling of having the sticks of paint in my hands. I love all brands of pastels but tend to use Terry Ludwigs, Great Americans and Diane Townsend pastels the most. I also like to experiment with surfaces and like most of the available pastel supports. I have been using Uart, Wallis and Canson lately. I estimate that I do some kind of underpainting for 95% of my work. I play around with many kinds of underpaintings and it depends on my subject as to which one I will choose. For this demo I did a water color underpainting on Uart paper. The photos show my progression from initial sketch to watercolor to blocking in the big shapes with pastel to the finishing marks. The painting took me about 1 1/2 hours from start to finish. It is 12x24.
