'Waiting for the Catch of the Day' 6x8 oil on panel ©Karen Margulis |
It was a beautiful day on Pawleys Island. We got up in time for another picture perfect sunrise and went out to catch the early morning light on the marsh with our cameras. By the time we got back to the house the light was flat and uninteresting for painting the beach or marsh so I decided to do an oil study of our resident gull.
Our next door neighbor is an avid fisherman and spends the whole day surf fishing. The birds know his routine well especially this one gull who hangs out in the area waiting for the leftover bait. I painted this guy quickly by blocking in the darks and the background with thin paint and building up the paint on the gull and the sand. I used a palette knife for the last layers.

'The Resident Gull' 6x8 pastel |
Here is a pastel study of our resident gull. I painted him on Tuesday when I had my pastels out. Tomorrow I am planning on getting up early and do some plein air pastels. Stay tuned!
