Plein air in Florida...Painting a Palm Tree

'Palm Tree Impression'. 5 x7. Pastel

I barely had time to repack my suitcase. I managed to get home from Chicago unpack and get in the car for the drive to South Florida. We are here visiting family for the weekend and it will be busy. But I did manage to do a quick little Plein air painting of a palm tree.

I threw in my little travel pastel kit....the one I took on the cruise and to Chicago. The pastels selection is working well for a great variety of landscapes! I will write more about this in another post.

Today I didn't have much time to paint but I was itching to paint a palm tree. We don't have palm trees in Georgia so I grab every opportunity to paint them. I found my subject in the parking lot. A coconut palm loaded with coconuts. I have learned that it is very important to pay attention to the variety of Palm trees when painting them. Coconut palms are very different from palmetto palms. If you want your paintings to look authentic then you need to be a careful observer! There is nothing better than observing and painting them from life.

Beautiful! I love the way you handle the ragged leaves and solid coconuts. Great sense of size about it! Gorgeous plein air painting.
