6 Things to do After Attending an Art workshop

I always wish I had an extra week after a workshop with no obligations.  A week to review and paint and try out some of the things that were covered during the workshop.  Too often we come home from a workshop recharged and inspired only to be faced with laundry, chores and errands.....or back to a job or family obligations.  The workshop 'magic' is quickly gone before we really have a chance to explore it.  This time I am making time in between obligations to do some post workshop review. Here are some things I plan to do.

  • Review notes.  I have a notebook filled with notes from the workshop with Doug Dawson. I have read through them again and made notes.  I will do this several times and will also type up a summary of the important points. Reviewing my notes reminds me of some of the important points and helps me come up with a plan of action.
  • Plan of Action.  Take the top 3 things you got out of the workshop and plan some exercises to help reinforce those points.
  • Look at your work.  Take out the paintings you did at the workshop and write down any feedback you received while it is still fresh.  Leave them as they are.....don't work on these paintings but use them as learning tools.  If you want to finish them....start another version instead.
  • Paint! Plan to do at least one painting within a week of the workshop incorporating any new technique you learned. The longer you wait the harder it will be to remember the finer points.
  • File any business cards and contact information from the artists you met at the workshop. Meeting others is one of the great benefits of the workshop experience so make the most of your new contacts!
  • Business. organize and file any receipts if you can use them for your business expenses/taxes.
I am working on my note review and plan of action and will share them in tomorrow's post.

Great ideas Karen. We're always so excited in anticipation of the workshop and forget or seldom think about "after" which is far more important.

These sound like great ideas. Too many mini workshops were a waste of time. By the time I got back to the project, I'd forgotten some of the details--or couldn't read my scribbled notes!

Not knowing your family circumstance I had to wonder why you couldn’t take some time to work up a painting right after getting home from an investment in your art. You probably paid to be in the classes, therefore the best “bang for your buck” would have been to further ingrain what you learned into your next painting. Laundry and household take a back seat. Hubby should be onboard with that. Children should want to see mommy painting pretty pictures.

What you propose takes time. Probably the same time painting your first since the class.

I do appreciate you’ve taken steps to keep what you have learned. I guess what I’m saying is doing helps to keep what you’ve learned and the family should want to see that happen. No?

By the way, I Love your work.
